Wired.com – Self-Assembling Mini-Robots Swim and Manipulate Objects

Icon Written by Simon Garnier on August 8, 2011 – 2:36 pm

Tiny, self-assembling robots can swim and clamp onto particles and then release them when subjected to the right magnetic fields.
These mini robotic doughnuts spontaneously form from metal particles floating between a layer of oil and water, and could potentially be used to manipulate chemical reactions, deliver medical treatments in the body or clean surfaces.
“It’s really [...]

Swarm Intelligence and Self-Assembly course at University of Colorado

Icon Written by Simon Garnier on August 8, 2011 – 2:20 pm

Dr. Dustin Reishus from the Correll lab at the University of Colorado will be teaching a course entitled "Swarm Intelligence and Self-Assembly" this fall. The course look at large-scale distributed systems in chemistry, biology, and robotics through the lens of mathematics and computer science. It will address such questions as:

How do ant colonies forage for [...]

How groups can find the right fit

Icon Written by Simon Garnier on May 19, 2011 – 9:09 am

Yesterday, PLoS ONE published my last article co-authored with my good friend Alexandre Campo, his students Olivier Dédriche and Mouhcine Zekkri, and Marco Dorigo (do I need to introduce him?). In this paper, we present a self-organizing mechanism that allows a group of individuals (in this case robots) to select a resource that matches its [...]

Richard Dawkins: Ants that farm, compost and weed

Icon Written by Simon Garnier on February 1, 2011 – 7:02 pm

Hereafter is a video of famous evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins speaking about leaf cutter ants. It's not a brand new video, but it's always interesting to hear about these fascinating ants. I hope you'll enjoy it too.

Thanks to http://www.antblog.co.uk/ for this discovery.

Stigmergy: special issue of Cognitive Systems Research – Call for papers

Icon Written by Simon Garnier on August 31, 2010 – 3:40 pm

Leslie Marsh, Assistant Director of the New England Institute of Cognitive Science and Evolutionary Studies, informed me of a coming special issue of Cognitive Systems Research dedicated to stigmergy. Along with Margery Doyle (Air Force Research Lab), he will be editor of this special issue and invite all researchers interested in stigmergic behaviors and communication [...]

From biology to robotics, and back

Icon Written by Simon Garnier on June 6, 2010 – 4:12 pm

Next Wednesday (June 9th 2010), Professor Yan Meng invited me to give a talk at the Stevens Institute of Technology, near New-York. The lecture will hold at 2pm in room 204 of Babbio Center. The title of the seminar is "From biology to robotics, and back". Hereafter is the abstract:

During swarm robotics meetings, one can [...]
